We are the charity formerly known as Cumbria Action for Sustainability (CAfS)
We help people, communities and organisations tackle the climate crisis by promoting action and supporting change.
Climate change is increasingly affecting Cumbria, a region known for its stunning landscapes, agriculture and rich biodiversity.
Rising temperatures and changing precipitation patterns pose significant threats to the natural environment, experiencing shifts in ecosystems and increased flooding incidents. Local communities are facing challenges related to agriculture, tourism, and infrastructure as extreme weather events become more frequent.
The Carlisle climate stripes really highlight the crisis we are facing.
The climate stripes developed by Professor Ed Hawkins at the University of Reading help us to visualise the speed of global warming in our county.
Efforts to mitigate and adapt to these changes are underway as part of the Zero Carbon Cumbria initiative.
We manage and deliver:
We work across Cumbria to enable individuals, communities, businesses and local authorities to reduce the county’s carbon footprint and bring about a more sustainable way of life here.
We’ve been running grassroots projects to tackle climate change in Cumbria for more than 20 years.
Our impact stats below are from 2024-2025
We are a team of more than 40 staff, most of us part time, led by our CEO and board of seven trustees. We are delighted to have carbon footprinting expert Professor Mike Berners-Lee as our patron.
Over the next few years, we are planning to build our donations and other unrestricted income streams so that we can undertake our climate action work in areas that don’t attract much external funding.
We’re very proud to be supported by high-profile national and local funders, who are making it possible for us to deliver real change in Cumbria.
People inspiring people
We are a friendly and supportive team of colleagues and board of trustees committed to equality, diversity and inclusion in all that we do.
