Practical ways to make your Great Big Green Week and Big Lunch events greener, saving money and carbon this summer

Great Big Green Week runs from 6–14 June this year, and coincides with The Big Lunch, 5–8 June and Open Farm Sunday on 7 June. It’s a brilliant opportunity for communities to come together, celebrate what makes their place special, and take positive action for climate, nature and local food.

Funding is available to support events delivered under the banner ‘Together for Good’, thanks to Westmorland and Furness Council and Cumberland Council (via the Cumberland Food Partnership).

In Westmorland and Furness, events should inspire interest and engagement in climate and nature. In Cumberland, the focus is on the Big Lunch – bringing people together to celebrate local growing and sustainable food. We want to help as many groups as possible turn these ideas into successful, low-carbon events.

This friendly, interactive online workshop is for community groups who want to:

  • find out more about available funding

  • pick up easy, practical ways to reduce the carbon footprint of your event

  • share ideas and learn from others who’ve done it before

You’ll hear from Cumbria's Waste Service Manager Barbara Herridge, who’ll share top tips on planning ahead to reduce food waste, alongside Futureproof Cumbria on cutting carbon in other areas of event delivery. We’ll also be joined by local groups who’ll share real-world lessons, handy shortcuts, and key do’s and don’ts from organising past events.

Come along for inspiration, practical advice, and a chance to swap ideas with others planning something great for June.
