What to look out for:
Signs someone might need help

You don’t need to know all the answers – just recognise the signs and refer a client if you notice or hear any of the following:

In the home
  • Their home always feels cold, damp or draughty.
  • Mould or condensation on walls or window.
  • Where a coat indoors, or only using one room to keep warm.
  • Heating switched off or rarely used, even in winter.
Health conditions and vulnerabilities made worse by cold homes
  • Heart and lung conditions (e.g. COPD, asthma).
  • Autoimmune, neurological or musculoskeletal conditions.
  • Mental health challenges.
  • Long COVID.
  • Terminal illness.
  • Recent hospitalisation due to respiratory illness.
  • Young children or a pregnant person in the house.
  • Older person living alone, especially over 65.
Money and bills
  • Worried or anxious about energy bills
  • Behind on energy payments, or on a prepayment meter that keeps running out
  • Rationing heating, hot water, or cooking to save money
  • Mentions choosing between heating and other essentials
  • Difficulty understanding bills, tariffs or switching supplier.

What happens after you refer?

1. We get in touch

One of our customer service advisers will contacts your client directly, usually within [X working days], to have a friendly, no-obligation conversation about their situation.

2. We understand their situation

We ask about their home, their heating, their bills, and anything else affecting them — no jargon, no pressure, just a conversation.

3. We put together a plan

Depending on what they need, this might include a home visit, help applying for grants or benefits, energy-saving advice, or a referral on to retrofit or solar support.

4. We see it through

We stay in touch with them until things are sorted — whether that’s a completed application, a home improvement, or simply peace of mind that they’re on the right tariff and getting the support they’re entitled to.

5. We can keep you in the loop

With your client’s consent, we can let you know the outcome — so you’re not left wondering what happened after you referred.
