Back in the late 1990’s an organisation was founded in Eden to champion local action to help deliver global environmental change. It was called ‘Eden Local Agenda 21’ but soon had reach and influence beyond Eden. So in 2008 the organisation rebranded to Cumbria Action for Sustainability, usually shortened to CAfS. Since then, we’ve continued to grow, adapt, and expand our work across the county, and in recent years have targeted our efforts to tackling the causes of climate breakdown. We help people make their homes warmer and healthier, support organisations to become more energy efficient, and work with partners and communities to build a greener, fairer future.

For a long time, the name CAfS served us well. But as we’ve evolved, we’ve realised that while CAfS means a lot to those who already know us, it doesn’t explain who we are or what we do to new audiences. And in a world where climate action is more urgent than ever, requiring all of us to change our lives, we need to be as clear, accessible, and visible as possible.

So, after careful thought, and a hefty dose of apprehension, we’re taking the next step in our journey with a new name and identityFutureproof Cumbria

What’s changing – and what’s staying the same?

We now have a new name, new look, and new feel, to better reflect our work, our values, and the communities we serve. Futureproof Cumbria gives us a strong and forward looking presence—one that will help us reach more people, inspire more action, and make a bigger impact. It won’t be shortened to an acronym. It will enable us to be found more easily online. And there’s no fiddly little ‘f’ to deal with in CAfS… 😉

But don’t worry, we might have changed on the outside, but we’re still the same on the inside. Our mission remains to help people and organisations across Cumbria reduce carbon emissions, save energy, and build resilience in the face of climate breakdown. We’re just making it easier for everyone to find us, understand what we do, and get involved.

Why now?

With climate action more urgent than ever, we need to make sure our message is heard loud and clear.

The name Futureproof Cumbria reflects exactly what we stand for: helping homes, businesses and communities across Cumbria get ready for a low carbon future. Our new identity brings a fresh, modern feel that reflects the ambition and optimism we have for Cumbria’s future. It’s designed to be more engaging, more recognisable, and a representation of the work we do every day. We hope you’ll love it as much as we do!

Same mission, fresh look

We may look a little different, but at heart, we’re still the same organisation you know and support. We’re proud of our origins, from Eden LA21, to CAfS and now we’re looking forward to Futureproof Cumbria.
