Communities throughout Westmorland and Furness are preparing to celebrate Great Big Green Week (6–14 June), with more than 40 local groups organising events under this year’s theme, Together for Good.
Supported by grants from Westmorland and Furness Council Locality Boards and administered by us here at Futureproof Cumbria, the programme showcases a wide range of community-led activities focused on climate action, nature and sustainability.
Events taking place across towns and villages across the area include poetry and music sessions, craft activities, community lunches, repair cafés, planting and gardening projects, wildlife recording, guided walks, film screenings, and swap and share events. Activities are designed to bring people together, celebrate local nature and encourage practical action on climate change.
A total of £8,500 in funding has been distributed to support local organisations and community groups to take part in the national celebration of community climate action.
This year’s programme highlights the many ways communities are already taking positive action locally — from reducing waste and sharing skills to improving habitats, encouraging active travel and creating opportunities for people to connect with nature and each other.
Great Big Green Week is the UK’s largest celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature, with thousands of events taking place nationwide each year.
